Studies on Hemolysis of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus

Abstract
The hemolysis of Vibrio parahaemolyticus on a specially prepared media is called as Kanagawa phenomenon and considered as an important criterion of enteropathogenicity. The author is interested in the hemolysis of this organism with a special reference to Kanagawa phenomenon, and carried out some experiments with the following results.
1. Most of Kanagawa positive strains was positive in Greig test, and considerable number of Kanagawa negative strains was also positive. The result of Greig test was almost the same between cultures in Brain Heart Infusion Broth and in Modified Wagatsuma Broth.
2. Kanagawa. phenomenon is clearly demonstrated on Modified Wagatsuma Agar than on Brain Heart Infusion Agar, and rabbit red cells were more sensitive to hemolytic factors than goat red cells.
3. Number of strains showing positive Kanagawa phenomenon decreased when the composition of Modified Wagatsuma Agar was further modified.
4. Some test strains showed swarming growth on Modified Wagatsuma Agar with 3% NaCl or without yeast extract.
5. Hemolytic factors were demonstrable in. both culture supernatant and in sediment.
6. Kanagawa positive strains showed some strong lethal activity in inoculated mice into peritoneal cavity as compared with Kanagawa negative strains.
